FAQ – Brass and Copper CNC Machining

What are the main challenges when machining brass vs. copper?

Brass is generally free‑machining, produces short chips, and offers excellent surface finishes. Copper, however, is softer and more ductile, which can lead to built‑up edge, long stringy chips, and work hardening. Our Swiss‑type CNC lathes use specialized tool geometries, high‑pressure coolant, and optimized feed/speed parameters to handle both materials efficiently.

Can you machine high‑conductivity copper alloys (e.g., C101, C110)?

Yes. We regularly machine pure copper and high‑conductivity alloys (C101, C110, C182, etc.) for electrical and thermal applications. Our process controls heat generation and chip evacuation to prevent deformation and maintain tight tolerances.

What surface finishes can you achieve on brass and copper parts?

We consistently achieve Ra 0.8–1.6 µm on standard turning/milling operations. With secondary processes like burnishing, polishing, or diamond turning, we can reach Ra 0.4 µm. Brass can also be easily barrel tumbled or vibratory finished for a uniform matte or bright appearance.

Do you offer any post‑machining treatments for corrosion resistance?

Yes. For brass, we offer anti‑tarnish passivation, clear lacquer coating, or electroless nickel plating. For copper, we provide anti‑oxidization dipping, immersion silver or tin plating, and even epoxy coating. These treatments prevent discoloration and maintain electrical/thermal performance.
