A global provider of lightweight hardware high performance required a dependable source for their line of new custom manufactured lightweight performance titanium fastening devices. The original product will consist of Titanium bolts used for Road Bikes (M5, M6, M8), titanium screws used for mounting disc brake systems on bicycles, and titanium nuts and bolts for connecting links from the bicycle frame to the frame and axle assembly. The customer has also expressed a desire to develop additional applications from this same base design that will utilize titanium fastening devices for Motorcycles and bolts for off-road and street bikes, and will ultimately utilize titanium fastening devices for automobiles and marine hardware to attach boat fittings.
Through our design experience as the leading titanium racing bolts manufacturer - we engineered and manufactured through CNC Swiss machining Ti 6Al 4V round bars with a rainbow anodized finish - offering anti-corrosion and visual differentiation between parts. The number of titanium racing bolts produced went from an initial order amount of 200 pcs up to full-scale production of 20k+ pcs/month in just 12 weeks, with a guaranteed lead time of 15 days from order receipt to order shipment. Today, the same manufacturing platform produces motorcycle titanium bolts, titanium racing bolts, and titanium motocross bolts for customers worldwide.

The client had sourced the titanium bike screws from different job shops but had 4 main challenges with them:
1. Some titanium bicycle nuts/bolts were too purple while others were too gold; so there was inconsistent rainbow anodizing which resulted in color variation from batch to batch. High end cyclists expect their visible fasteners to have a uniform vibrant rainbow finish.
2. Poor surface finish on titanium bolts for road bikes resulted in thread galling when the titanium bolts were assembled with aluminum and/or carbon fibre components.
3. The leadtimes of 30 to 45 days from previous suppliers resulted in popular titanium race; bolts not being available out of stock at peak seasons.
4. The customer wanted to expand into motorcycle titanium bolts and titanium criss; bolts and titanium car bolts but the current vendors do not have a capacity to perform high-volume precision machining.
Therefore, the customer is looking for one source who can manufacture custom titanium fasteners for bicycle, motorcycle, automotive and marine applications with consistent rainbow anodizing, ±0.005 mm tolerance and 15 day leadtime.

Raw material certification: Ti-6Al-4V bar stock with traceable mill certificates.
CNC Swiss machining on Citizen L32 multi-axis lathes:
Guide bushing support for long, slender bolts without deflection.
Thread whirling produces precise threads, eliminating galling on titanium bicycle nuts and bolts.
Live tooling mills hex heads, flange features, and drilled safety wire holes in a single setup.
Rainbow anodizing using a proprietary voltage-stepping process that produces consistent color across every batch.
Ultrasonic cleaning removes all residues.
100% inspection for dimensions and color.
| Challenge | Root Cause | Solution Implemented |
| Thread galling on assembly | Rough thread flanks from single‑point threading | Thread whirling with polished inserts + post‑process light tumbling |
| Rainbow color variation across batches | Voltage drift during anodizing | Automated voltage control with real‑time feedback; calibration before each batch |
| High scrap rate on small diameter bolts | Material deflection during turning (L/D > 8:1) | Guide bushing support + reduced cutting force strategies |
| Inconsistent hex head dimensions | Tool wear on live milling cutters | TiAlN‑coated carbide end mills with tool life monitoring |
| Meeting 15‑day lead time at 20k pcs/month | Bottleneck at anodizing line | Dedicated anodizing tank for titanium fasteners; second shift added |
Custom titanium fasteners production has a strict quality assurance (QA) plan for each part that is made. The parts created undergo in process inspections, including the use of CNC probe checks to define critical diameters and start points of threads on every tenth part created; also they undergo final inspection through the use of automated vision systems for confirmation of dimensions, length, or whether there is any threading present on each part.
A rainbow anodized part's color is verified against a master using a spectrophotometer; if the measured value is outside ΔE < 2.0, then it will be rejected. Each part is subject to the application of go/no-go thread gauges as a statistical measurement risk based upon the acceptable quality levels (AQL) set at 0.65. Surface finish ( Ra ) should be less than or equal to 0.8 μm on all bearing surfaces; using a profilometer will verify this. All inspection records will be linked to the corresponding production lot number and kept for a minimum of 10 years.
| Metric | Target | Achieved |
| First‑pass yield | ≥95% | 99.5% (over 240,000 parts delivered) |
| Color rejection rate | <1% | 0.2% (all re‑anodized) |
| Thread gauge CpK | ≥1.33 | 1.58 |
| On‑time delivery (15 days) | 98% | 100% |
| Customer return rate (12 months) | ≤50 ppm | 0 ppm |
| Cost per part (vs. previous supplier) | – | -18% at same volume |
The customer has since launched three additional product families using the same manufacturing platform: titanium motocross bolts for off‑road bikes, titanium car bolts for racing chassis, and titanium marine hardware for boat deck fittings.
There are currently manufacturing capabilities that support other industries by offering corrosion-resistant lightweight fasteners made from titanium: (Understand some bicycle riders prefer titanium bolts over steel for their bikes please), there are motorcycle dealerships and/or shops that provide titanium engines/calipers/fairings, automotive dealers and shops offering titanium fasteners (chassis, turbo mounts, trim), marine fabrication using titanium for deck fittings, hatch hinges and rail mounts and custom manufactured titanium products for aerospace, medical and industrial applications.
